A Glimpse into Your Future continued...

Dining at Restaurants:
Pre-college teens and your current group of college age students show similar eating habits and food preferences when visiting commercial operations. With over 80% of both groups visiting a Quick Serve operation regularly, the burger chains, with their menu variety, speed and convenience still lead the way, followed closely by pizza, C-Stores and sandwich shops.

How concerned are they about health and nutrition?
Pre-college teens, your future customers, are showing a growing level of awareness about health and nutrition issues in dining but are still primarily guided by taste in making their choices. By the time they reach college age, their food choices start to reflect that awareness, possibly as a result of nutritional educational programs. A large percentage of college age students said they are shifting their away-from-home eating habits from the burger chains and pizza shops they frequented before graduation to more salads, grilled chicken sandwiches, vegetables, fruit and yogurt than they did a year ago.

Here are the six key areas the research suggests are
important for dining services professionals to keep in mind for feeding both current and future college age students:

• By the time they get to college, students are used to a
grab ‘n go lifestyle –
Have plenty of options and packaging
available for portable meals and snack choices.

• Students graze all day long and into the evening – Make sure you have some self-serve choices for late night study breaks. Use an expanded vending program to support late evening snacking on a 24/7 basis and be sure to include healthier vending options!

• Students are heavy consumers of specialty coffees – Consider multiple, convenient stations for providing coffee and light snacks that operate well into the evening – and remember that coffee is a cultural and social occasion for many students.

• Healthier food choices are a must! – Students demand them, but you have to balance the requests with realistic consumption rates – and healthy food choices must still taste great!

• Students are restaurant savvy – They expect good, tasty food and good service for every dining occasion, meal or snack opportunity.
